How to take a Screen Shot on a Mac

A Screen Shot is a picture of your computer screen. It’s very effective for showing others what you are experiencing with the applications on your computer. It’s a picture of the screen generated by your computer, not to be mistaken with taking a picture of the screen with your camera. This is a built in feature on Mac and can be triggered by keys on the keyboard. There are software packages that help the Screen Shot process and build on the system functionality.

For the whole screen:

  1. At the same time press the Command + Shift + 3 buttons on your keyboard
  2. Look on your desktop for the new file that will be labeled with the date and time the Screen Shot was taken. That should be your screen shot.

For a region you can select of the screen:

  1. At the same time press the Command + Shift + 4 buttons on your keyboard
  2. A crosshair pointer will appear.
  3. Click and drag the crosshair over the area you want to take a Screen Shot of.
  4. Look on your desktop for the new file that will be labeled with the date and time the Screen Shot was taken. That should be your screen shot.

Note: While you have the crosshair icon you can cancel the Screen Shot by pressing the esc button on your keyboard.

For a specific window:

  1. At the same time press the Command + Shift + 4 buttons on your keyboard
  2. A crosshair pointer will appear.
  3. Press the Spacebar button on your keyboard.
  4. The crosshair will change to a camera.
  5. Move the camera icon over the window you want a picture of, it will become highlighted.
  6. Simply click the mouse button or trackpad.
  7. Look on your desktop for the new file that will be labeled with the date and time the Screen Shot was taken. That should be your screen shot.

Note: While you have the crosshair or camera icon you can cancel the Screen Shot by pressing the esc button on your keyboard.
